Makeup department musings

So I am reading the Twilight books, ya’ll. I do have to admit they aren’t my favorite. Nevertheless, they have a great fantasy quality that keeps me turning the pages. However, after I finish the series it’s back to memoirs for me.

Anyway, I saw the first movie and now I am confused. Luckily, I have smart, witty, well-versed readers who can perhaps shed some light on the subject.

For those of you who don’t know, the Twilight series is about vampires. The vampires are extremely, blindingly, and out-of-this-world  B E A U T I F U L. They also don’t age and are immortal and blah, blah, blah. Their unparalleled beauty is designed to lure their prey (humans) right to them so that they can kill them (how charming, right?).

So here’s the deal. The casting team who hired the young actors who play the vampires did a great job. They are all very beautiful people who fit the vampire persona. However, the makeup team managed to make them look… well, in a word,…. bad.

Now, I know the vampires are supposed to be pale and have dark circles but they are also supposed to be gorgeous. Moreover, how did a team of professional makeup artists manage to make such beautiful people look so bad? In their defense, I will say they did a better job with the gentleman. But the ladies really got the shaft here.

Take a look:

Slide1This is the beautiful Ashley Greene who plays Alice Cullen in Twilight. As you can see, she is a fresh, pixie-faced girl. Much like how Alice is described in the book. However, somehow in “vampire mode” her pixie, fairy-like glow is gone. And with that wig on she kind of looks like a housewife, not a perpetual 17-year old.

Slide1This is the stunning Nikki Reed who had the honor of playing Rosalie Cullen, the angelic and breathtaking vampire in Twilight. Rosalie Cullen is described as the most beautiful woman in the world. Nikki Reed is positively gorgeous as herself. But as Rosalie… eh, she’s pretty; but not jaw dropping.

Perhaps I am being overly critical. As I said before, I am not the biggest Twilight fan. However, I am a HUGE filmmaking fan. I love to see the magic that can occur on screen. For me, this isn’t the best work.

What do ya’ll think?

thank you so much for your lovely compliment.
gives me a lot of encouragement =)
hope you’re having a lovely day.

  2. I like Nikki Reed before Twilight. Also, I love your sidebar!

  3. I was a Twilight fan after the first book, but then the other books were…awful. And the movie upon a second watching was a disaster. The acting was incredibly sub par. I do think though that Ashley Greene was a cute Alice. If you saw her moving on screen, rather than a picture, I thought she was adorable. Now Nikki Reed, they definitely washed out!
Yeah I would recommend the first book to people, but the rest of them are just crap.

  4. Yikes! That is strange. I’m thinking that they placed dark circles around their eyes because, while they’re supposed to be gorgeous and ethereal, they don’t really sleep, and they’ve been alive for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t really like the books. I own all four of them; but, to be completely honest, I have been struggling through the first book for two years. I read 25 pages, then I can’t take anymore and put it down. I just want to finish it, but I get bored after a bit. I haven’t seen the film yet. I want to, though! :)

  5. Love that second after!

Oh I’m so with you on this! I’ll get stones thrown at me for this but Edward Cullen does not do it for me…I’m not quite sure what look they were going for but yes, the makeup definitely needs work for the whole cast. Though, Kristen Stewart I actually prefer how she looks in the movie than in real life.

  7. they definitely look better before. ashley greene is so cute! i didn’t see the movie because i heard it was really bad from some of my twilight mega fan friends. i only read the first book, which i thought was ok. the plot is really good, but the writing is just ok.

  8. Wow, I’m definitely much more a fan of the “befores!”

  9. I read a few pages of twilight… i think it’s like 14 year old romance novels, like “his hair is blowing in the wind, and he wispers… no, i don’t like to be a vampire” LOL

  10. and yeeah I think I’ll watch the movie instead of finishing the book!

  11. The twilight series totally reads like fanfiction, but the 14 year old teenage girl inside me loves it. x

  12. I guess I didn’t realize what a difference there was, but after seeing the before and after I have to agree with you!! I think the actors should have more of a natural appeal, but I understand how the book is so it makes it difficult. But…it does not look good to wash the actors out, not so pretty.

  13. I solely agree with YOU all the way – Filmmaking: YES but Twilight: NO !!!

  14. I agree, I think they both look better without all that make up..they were not more beautiful in twilight. I feel like they should have found a better way to rock the vampire-pale look!

I couldn’t agree more- I didn’t think the cast of Twilight looked so alluring at all. I prefer memoirs, much like yourself.
Now Interview with a Vampire- that’s a movie and book, I really was into. This Twilight series…not so much.
You should do a post about some of your fav books. I always love to know what people enjoy reading.

  16. Hello hunnie, sweet website! I genuinely like this article.. I was wondering about this for a while now. This cleared a lot up for me! Do you have a rss feed that I can add?
