It’s that time of year again! Holiday dress season! I love getting my holiday dress every year. Here are things every girl should know when searching for and buying the perfect dress.
- Know your body: Just because it is “in style” in a magazine doesn’t mean it is in style for your body. When you go dress shopping, don’t think about what you saw in Elle, think about what looks good on you!
- Know your size: Don’t stuff yourself into a dress. On the other hand, don’t let your dress overwhelm you with excess fabric. Know your size and buy it. It will make a world of difference.
- Know a tailor: Tailors are gifts from heaven. A nip here and a tuck there can take an amazing dress and make it extraordinary. Also, it is pretty cheap to get a dress altered. I was shocked at the low price tag at my local tailor… and I live in NYC.
- Know the weather: It is DecemBURR. Don’t forget tights and a cardigan. No dress is cute enough to sacrifice your health… seriously.
- Know that you can sparkle: The holidays are all about showing off your end-of-year glow, so buy that sparkly cardigan or mini skirt!
- Know where your going: Are you going to one party? Are you party hopping all over town? Get the down-low before you go and plan your footwear accordingly.
- Know that you can outfit recycle: We are in a recession, ya’ll. Wear the same dress to Christmas and New Year’s parties. Just use your creative juices. You will be amazed at how different you can make a dress look with different sets of accessories.
- Know your face: Be creative with your makeup. Try a red lip to accent your new sparkly dress, or maybe a smokey eye! Just don’t go too overboard. You don’t wanna detract from your new frock.
- Know what to do with your hair: If your dress has a interesting back or neckline, don’t hide it by wearing your hair down. Find the perfect hair style to go with your dress.
- Know that you can have fun: The holidays are all about fun and togetherness. Buy a dress you can dance in, hug in, eat in, and be your amazing self in.
Happy dress shopping!

Um…can you come shopping with me!! And then do my hair!!? I love that photo! It totally reminds me of the scene in Sleeping Beauty where the fair godmothers are creating the dress for her and the dress is floating around. Yea, I just made a reference to a Disney cartoon…right here in this blogger box!

My absolute favourite part…”eat in”. This time of year is for glutting and seriously those body con dresses are off limits in my books – the flowier the better
I love the dresses hanging in the trees…best lanterns ever!

So fabulous post Clare !
I bought a fancy dress that I’m going to wear New Year’s Eve, but I’m also going to a concert in it. The dress begs me to wear heels (which I do have ONE pair that just happen to suit it perfectly), but I’m sooo not the heels type and I want to be able to move around…any tips???
That photo is supercute!

Hey Clare. Lots of great advice. You always offer such useful tips up here. I hope you will have a fantastic weekend. Cheers!
I seriously adore your blog… and it reminded me that maybe you will know… I am going to DC this weekend for a bday party… taking the metro… which means walking in 32 degree weather with 4″ pumps and a small dress… any suggestions how to keep my legs warm til I get there? Leg warmers maybe? I’m pretty much dreading it.
PS. Thanks for following my blog
It’s always nice to get comments from my pal Clarabelle.

OMG! It never fails everytime I buy a dress, skirt or pair of pants they always have to be tailored because my bust is too small and my hips are too narrow! I would die without a tailor, well maybe not but come close to it! Clare, THANK YOU for this post, it’s solely helpful!:))
p.s. Can’t wait to see your HOLIDAY dress!
