I’m having a bit of a fashion crisis right now and might need your help…I just became a student again and do not know what to wear… I need a signature go to look and a consult!!!

First and foremost, congrats! Going back to school is very rewarding (and extremely challenging). I wish you all the best. Second, I understand your qualms about a lack of things to wear. Heading back to school at an older age is completely different from being a starry eyed 18-year-old freshmen. Unfortunately, sweats, mini jean skirts, and Ugg boots won’t do the trick.

When you go back to school as an adult, you are usually doing so for a professional reason. Therefore, your look should reflect that. You can’t rock up to class in VS PINK sweats, a hoodie and a messy bun; nor can you wear a business suit and embarrass yourself. In short, your look should be:

Casually Professional

Here are few tips:

You cannot go wrong with a good pair of skinnies. They are sleek and feminine, but they also have a nice tailored look that has a perfect professional edge. They are comfortable enough for a 3  hour class, but sleek enough to be taken seriously.

Note** Do make sure your skinny jeans aren’t too skinny. Notice the jeans above have a little give to them. Make sure your legs are getting enough blood circulating through them.

Whether it has preppy piping, feminine ruffles or it looks like you borrowed it from your boyfriend, you cannot go wrong with the perfect blazer. This is a must have for the hallowed halls of higher education institutions. Also, the right blazer can go with any outfit. Throw it on before school for the perfect touch of class.

Walk to class, walk to your second class, walk to the library, walk to lunch, walk to meet your professor, walk to a meeting, walk back to class, walk to grab dinner, walk to last class, walk to car, walk into house, climb into bed. There’s a lot of walking involved with going back to school. Don’t hurt yourself by wearing heels.

Since we are on the topic of shoes; do invest invest in a nice pair of rain boots. It’s terribly difficult to concentrate on a lecture when the entire bottom half of your brand new skinny jeans are sopping wet.

No more backpacks, ya’ll! Here’s a simple rule to use when buying your university tote. If you are going to school below the Mason-Dixon line, the bag better be Vera Bradley. If you are going to school above the Mason-Dixon line the bag should be leather or canvas and one solid color. However, do leave the L.L. Bean backpack at home.

Going back to school means tons of presentations! While a full suit isn’t usually necessary you still have to look sleek and professional. The pencil skirt is figure flattering and professional. Buy one in black and dark grey.

This look is perfectly effortless, conservative and not too stuffy or relaxed. An ideal outfit for a lecture class or a quick coffee meeting with a professor. The outfit is comfy but also says “take me seriously”.

Perfect presentation attire. Feminine and flirty without showing too much skin.

Another great look for class. Though do replace those heels with flats!

Every pair of jeans has a story.

It was well after noon when she woke up Sunday morning. It was 2:30 to be exact. The art show started at 3:30. It was truly a miracle she woke up with enough time to make herself presentable. Sleeping late was always her forte, but it often took a hefty chunk out of her “getting ready” time.

She wasn’t one of those stuffy artists who asked for a champagne reception and evening gowns at her art shows. Instead, she wanted her shows to feel as relaxed and carefree as the art. As she pulled on her favorite boyfriend jeans and her “good luck” sheer white tee, she was bursting with excitement. She knew this show would be a good one.

She stuffed her wallet in her back pocket… purses are too pretentious. Then, she kissed Lolly, her grey cat, goodbye and headed out the door. Running her hands along the exposed brick wall in her Soho apartment along the way.

Planning other people’s weddings was proving to be much easier than planning her own. The sure-fire pep talks she had given to brides on countless occasions were doing nothing to help her mood as she raced down Madison Avenue during her lunch break. She wished for her fiance; but he was in Seattle on  business. She hadn’t quite grasped the time difference, and she sensed he was growing irritated whenever she called him at 8:00 am to talk to him before work. He always mumbled something about how it was 5:00 am and to please call later…

At any rate, the wedding was in two weeks and she still hadn’t gotten bridesmaid’s gifts, shoes to go with her gown, deciding on a champagne for the toast, or decided on flowers for anyone’s bouquet. She glanced quickly at the shoes she was wearing now. Pink was her favorite color, and the shoes were marvelously comfortable.  Pink shoes with Vera Wang white (and her mother’s appalled stare) danced through her head as she entered the florist…

She glanced at her phone as she took another sip of her caramel latte. She was 7 minutes late to the conference call and had 11 missed calls. She would let them squirm for a bit. She flipped through the pages of Allure and read over the makeup tips. She was trying to revamp her look. More importantly, she wanted to master that glorious red lip she has seen at Fashion Week. Ahh, it was a beautiful look, she mused.

She began to gather her things, quietly closing the magazine and placing it gently into her canvas tote. She pulled out her compact and took a quick look at herself. Then she smiled as she thought of the “very important” conference call she was headed to. She was the only one who knew it was merely the local Chelsea catering company. They needed a final figure for the Labor Day party. It was Friday, her team needed to loosen up.

She now had 15 missed calls…
